dance for two

Couple dancing, slow dancing, dancing for two?

I don't work with couple dancing as is usual in dance schools. Get to know my dance concept for couples:

No fixed dance partners

You will train with different partners. You don't need to bring anyone with you. If you only want to dance with one person, please bring them with you.

Safe physical proximity

Physical proximity and sensual movements serve to create a sense of well-being and individual development. For me, the dance floor is a safe space for physical expression and is not used to find a partner.

Leading and following regardless of gender

I mainly teach according to the ELEF principle: Everybody leads, everybody follows. This means that all participants learn experiences and skills in the area of leading and following. Depending on what is on offer, you can then take on the role that suits you best. A good leader also listens and a good follower also has their own voice.

Comfortable clothing and body

Dress as smartly or casually as you like. Movement-friendly clothing and thin soles allow you maximum freedom and connection. Avoiding intrusive smells (bad breath, sweat, strong perfume) is a big plus when it comes to physical proximity.

Intuitive learning instead of choreographies and counting beats

I convey a dance connection to you, to the music and to other people. In addition to physical techniques, it is about qualities such as body tension and relaxation, grounding and expression. Dancing together is like a good conversation and every movement is a word.

Inclusive Sensitivity

I offer a relaxed and resource-oriented learning experience. Due to my open teaching concept, the courses are also largely suitable for people who have physical limitations (MS, ME/CFS, post Covid/Vac) and are generally not impaired in their mobility.

topics

  • Authentic Blues Dance

Authentic blues movements and steps are learned and insights into the history of the dance are given. Anyone who is moved by the blues and wants to delve deeper is welcome. Away from gender roles, all participants learn to lead and follow and can decide along the way, depending on their personal preferences, whether they prefer to follow, lead or dance both.

  • Couple dances of the 1920s

From the famous Charleston to the Afro-American blues to the animal dances in one-step - solo or in a dance pair: the 1920s have a lot to offer on the dance floor!

  • BluesFusion

Fusion Dance is a form of contemporary, socially improvised couple dance that combines different dance styles to create a new aesthetic. The dance does not require adherence to certain defined dance styles, but is based on an approach that emphasizes musicality, combines existing movement styles and integrates partner techniques, such as mindful connection in the dance couple.

  • SlowDance

Based on the African-American blues dance and methods from dance education and therapy:

  • Dancing in the dark - Paartanz inklusiv

    Current information and dates

  • Merengue

The Dominican Merengue is a Latin American couple dance with very simple steps. The music of the same name encourages you to swing your hips with rousing rhythms. Caribbean music can be used to develop your own musical skills and add dance expression. If you like moving to music, you will find the Merengue is a dance that can be learned quickly. In this context, the principles of leading and following, expression and various figures are learned in relaxed exercises. Away from gender roles, all participants learn to lead and follow and can decide on their way according to personal preferences whether they prefer to follow, lead or both. The focus is on having fun and feeling good about movement and dance expression.

SlowDance Retreat

Feed your soul!

October 3-5, 2025

Welcome!

Spend four relaxing days with a small group in the countryside, including overnight accommodation and full board! This long weekend gives you the opportunity to connect with yourself, the music, and with your partner. Away from the routine of everyday life, we dance and relax in a beautiful seminar house in nature - just an hour away from Cologne and Bonn.

Mindful SlowDance

A healing and relaxed dance is like a good conversation: with yourself and as a couple. This weekend, you can experience an intensive encounter with yourself and your fellow dancers, especially in a couples dance. Consent and mindfulness are very important at this event. Check out the information about my couples dance concept. Experience in West Coast Swing, Tango, Contact Improvisation, Fusion or Blues dance (couples dance) is a good fit for this weekend, but is not a prerequisite. The lesson content is dedicated to holistic couple dance principles (like fusion dance) and Afro-American Blues dance principles (like Blues dance aesthetics) and is also suitable for beginners. Registration is possible without a dance partner.

This weekend, blues and slow dance music will move you with their diverse expression of feelings: from emotional pain and longing to sensuality and joy of life - you can get in touch with what resonates with your body and soul. We offer you a safe dance floor for this.

Deep relaxation with practices from body and dance therapy as well as embodiment, we create a space for you in which you can relax and recharge. For this we use the beautiful dance room with wooden floor, the garden and the surrounding nature. Autumn with its slightly cooler air and colorful leaves invite you to take a deep breath. Each day is designed so that you can first come into contact with your body and your needs. There is the option of choosing offers with a focus on more energy or more relaxation and self-discovery. In the afternoon there is a dance encounter in pairs and in a group. Before going to bed, there is the opportunity to check in with youself again and relax. Our cook Matti spoils us with wonderful vegetarian meals and fruit. We offer you a safe place to retreat from everyday life.

    Friederike Reif

Since 1998, Friederike Reif has explored around 20 couple dances - from the world dance programme to other Latin and African-American dances and contemporary couple dances. She has a great love for African-American blues dance and fusion dance.

As the founder of TanzBildung, she has 18 years of experience as a couple's dance instructor in modern dance didactics and offers mindful and joyful approaches to couple's dance.

As a qualified dance and movement teacher and intercultural trainer, she integrates cultural and physical learning as well as methods from dance and movement therapies into her classes.

She will soon be completing her Master's degree in Dance Studies at the University of Music and Dance. Friederike's research also includes the history of couple dance from 1900 to 1940 and the further development of couple dance as an inclusive, intercultural and social practice.

You can find detailed information about her career and teaching concept here.

    Sarah

Sarah has been a passionate dancer since childhood. She has learnt a whole range of dances from belly dance to standard dances and Lindy Hop. The Afro-American blues dances finally completely captured her heart and her dancing legs. It felt like coming home, because she grew up with blues and soul music. Blues dancing has been her focus ever since.

Sarah has danced her way through countless international festivals and workshop formats and has been teaching in Cologne since 2018. In 2019, she continued her professionalisation at the Blues Teacher Training of the international blues greats Adamo and Vicci.

Sarah prepares her teaching content meticulously and places particular emphasis on the connection to the African-American roots of the blues.

In her classes she invites you to discover and curiously explore your own body and your own expression of dance.
